About the Event

What you're in for...

This is our version of a warm weather beach vacation with a touch of adventure, of course! Join us as we journey south to one of the premier paddling locations in the world. Our trip will include a... See more 2-day road trip to/from the Everglades, a day of kayak training and practice, and 4 days hopping islands in the Gulf.

Wildlife is plentiful near the Everglades as alligators can be a common sight inland and dolphins are always a highlight out on the water. If you're looking to learn something new, meet new people, see something breath-taking, and/or overcome a challenge, this is the trip for you!

Challenge Description:

Despite the fact that many IU Outdoor Adventures trips are designed for beginners, there are still inherent risks associated with the challenges of certain outdoor activities. We want to provide you with an unbiased snapshot of what those challenges are so you can make an educated decision regarding your participation.

Kayaking, in itself, can provide many challenges but especially on open water in the Gulf. Sun exposure and dehydration are two of our bigger concerns. Bugs are common during the spring season. Wildlife is almost a guarantee. We will paddle approx. 3-5 miles per day. Windy conditions can provide an added challenge and may even result in a change of itinerary.

Mental challenges vary by individual. Participants should be prepared for group interaction with limited time alone. The group will spend many days in backcountry areas and will require the group cohesion and teamwork. Cell phone service will be limited and generally discouraged to allow participants to fully appreciate the outdoors. Bathroom accommodations will vary between activities but will include backcountry practices for much of the trip (i.e. dig and bury or waste bags).

All participants are expected to read and agree to the terms listed under the "Support" menu before registering for this event.

  • This is an amazing trip!!! I had never been kayaking before and had a blast but it was still challenging and fun for those with experience too! If your looking for a relaxing, warm get away and a fresh start to the new year, you can't beat the price or the experience. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone!!
  • I went on this trip two years ago. It was amazing! One of the best experiences of my life!

I went on this trip two years ago and it was the best winter break of my life. While my friends were suffering through winter, I was getting a sunburn. It is the perfect way to escape the cold and come back totally refreshed for a new semester. I had no kayaking experience and was totally fine. I would definitely recommend going on this trip.
