Contemporary Poetries

Through discussion and in-class readings, participants will explore a variety of work by contemporary poets such as Lucille Clifton, Adrienne Rich, Mark Doty, Philip Levine, Martín Espada, Carolyn Forché, Marge Piercy, Sharon Olds, Cornelius Eady, Dorianne Laux, Natalie Diaz, and Ada Limón. Together, we will look at what makes a poem both unique and universal simultaneously.

Instructor: Shana Ritter has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and awarded individual Advancement Program grants for Indiana artists multiple times.  She has taught poetry and writing workshops in many settings and was previously at IU in Education and Cultural Responsivity. Her work has appeared in Lilith, Georgetown Review, and other publications. Her poetry chapbook Stairs of Separationwas published by Finishing Line Press. In the Time of Leaving, a historical novel of exile and resilience, is available through Amazon.
