Nice to Meet You: An Introduction to Creating Strong Characters in Short Fiction

We'll read and discuss a few short stories through the lens of character. We'll do in-class generative writing exercises, you'll do 3-5 short writing exercises 750 words or less outside of class, as well as expand one of those exercises into a longer story 1,000 words or more that we'll discuss in a workshop setting. At the last session, you'll do a short in-class reading of your work.

During these eight weeks, we'll take several different approaches to creating someone unforgettable: be they the story's protagonist, antagonist, or supporting character. We'll read and discuss a few short stories through the lens of character. Writing-wise, we'll do in-class generative writing exercises, you'll do 3-5 short writing exercises 750 words or less outside of class, as well as expand one of those exercises into a longer story 1,000 words or more that we'll discuss in a workshop setting. Instructor: Megan Giddings is a fiction editor at The Offing and a contributing editor at Boulevard. Her short stories are forthcoming or have been recently published in The Adroit Journal, Gulf Coast, and The Iowa Review. Megan's debut novel will be published by Amistad/HarperCollins in 2020. She is a lazy gardener and an enthusiastic cat mother.
