While an interesting plot or circumstances can propel a reader to keep reading, what often makes a reader fall in love and return to a story or novel several times is a strong character. During these eight weeks, we'll take several different approaches to creating someone unforgettable: be they the story's protagonist, antagonist, or supporting character. We'll read and discuss a few short stories through the lens of character. Writing-wise, we'll do in-class generative writing exercises, you'll do 3-5 short writing exercises 750 words or less outside of class, as well as expand one of those exercises into a longer story 1,000 words or more that we'll discuss in a workshop setting. At the last session, you'll do a short in-class reading of your work.
